I'd wanted to photograph Prague Castle at this hour pretty much ever since I arrived on May 31st, 2023, but it was one of those weeks where every evening was clear skies—not exactly what I had in my mind. Then, one evening I found myself walking along the Vltava River and the sky was finally cooperating, the sun was setting, the light fading, and the colours starting to shine through. It felt like time was slowing down just for this moment.
From across the river in the Old Town, the whole scene came together perfectly. Prague Castle—Pražský hrad in Czech—is the largest ancient castle complex in the world according to Guinness World Records, covering 70,000 square meters on the hillside above Malá Strana (Lesser Town). Dating back to the 9th century when it was founded around 870 AD, it's been the seat of Czech kings, Holy Roman Emperors, and now the President of the Czech Republic. The deep purples in the dusk sky, the reflections in the Vltava, the way the lights gradually came on around the castle and St. Vitus Cathedral—the Gothic cathedral whose construction began in 1344 and wasn't completed until 1929.
It was all so calm, but full of presence. Even with the city still buzzing behind me on the Old Town side, there was this incredible quietness to the view in front. The longer I stood there, the more I noticed—the little cafes glowing along the waterfront in Malá Strana, the intricate baroque rooftops climbing the hillside, St. Nicholas Church's distinctive green dome (built 1704-1755), the Gothic spires of St. Vitus catching the last hints of light.
I used my Canon R5 with the 24-105mm lens at 74mm, shooting at 1/25 second, f/14, and ISO 50. The slower shutter speed captured the soft reflections on the Vltava while the dusk deepened into blue hour, that magical time when the artificial lights and natural light are perfectly balanced. Prague has this way of making everything feel timeless—1,150 years of history visible in one frame—and I think this shot captures that just right.
This photo captures Prague Castle and the river Vltava as day gives way to night. It's got that perfect blend of historic charm, late sunset glow, and soft reflections. The world's largest ancient castle complex glowing on the hillside, Gothic and baroque architecture layered up the slope, and the 9th-century seat of power overlooking the city it's ruled for over a millennium.
When you look at this photograph, I want you to feel that timelessness—standing on the Vltava riverbank watching Prague Castle glow at dusk, where the 9th-century fortress, 14th-century St. Vitus Cathedral, and 18th-century baroque palaces rise above Malá Strana, all reflected in the river that's flowed through the heart of Prague for centuries in the Czech Republic.
