I had a very early alarm call to be ready for this photo. Layers to Arco captures the quiet anticipation of dawn from a path along the river between Torbole and Arco, looking toward the valley that leads away from Lake Garda. I’d set out early with the hope of seeing the first light touch the peaks, that moment when the morning alpenglow begins to paint the mountains in gold.
The sky was mostly clear, save for a few wisps of cloud drifting through the valley before dissolving into the growing warmth of sunrise. I remember the stillness, the air was warm yet cool, the light soft, and that feeling of being completely present, waiting for the day to begin. Shot handheld, it’s an image that layers distance, texture, and tone, with each ridge catching a little more light than the one before it.
