Belle Tout Lighthouse has always held a special place in my heart. Perched high on the cliffs of Beachy Head on the Sussex coast, this historic lighthouse has watched over the English Channel since 1828, enduring storms, coastal erosion, and even a dramatic relocation in 1999 when it was moved 17 metres inland. Now converted into a unique holiday retreat, it's become one of the most photographed landmarks along the Seven Sisters cliffs.
I'd been planning this shot for months, waiting for the perfect alignment of clear skies, new moon darkness, and the Milky Way's galactic core positioning over Beachy Head. When the forecast finally showed promise on this July night, I made the trek out to the clifftops in complete darkness. As I set up my camera, Belle Tout's beacon was shining brightly, its golden glow creating this beautiful contrast against the cold expanse of stars above.
Capturing Milky Way astrophotography at coastal locations like Beachy Head presents unique challenges—the moisture from the English Channel, the wind on the exposed clifftops, and the light pollution from Brighton to the west. But when conditions align, the results are magical. I shot this as a composite: multiple foreground exposures to capture Belle Tout and the windswept grasses, then tracked the Milky Way for 120 seconds across 14 stacked frames to reveal the galaxy's rich colours and intricate dust lanes.
When you look at this photograph, I want you to feel that sense of cosmic perspective—standing on the Beachy Head cliffs under the vastness of the Milky Way, with Belle Tout Lighthouse as a steadfast reminder of human resilience against the backdrop of infinite space.
