There's something about Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset, in the evening that just stops you. As the last light fades and the street lamps flicker on, this quiet part of this historic hilltop town comes alive in a completely different way. I shot this on May 5th, 2024, just after sunset and well into blue hour, when the warmth of the old streetlights spilled across the 18th-century stone cottages and cobbles. Everything was still, and the blue of the sky was the perfect contrast for the golden glow, making everything stand out even more.
Gold Hill is famous—everyone knows it from the 1973 Hovis bread advert with the boy pushing his bike up the steep cobbled street. But seeing it like this, away from the daytime crowds, felt like stepping back in time. The street drops steeply away, with views across the Blackmore Vale stretching out below. These cottages, built from local Greensand stone, have stood here for centuries, and the cobbled street dates back even further. Shaftesbury itself was founded by King Alfred the Great in 880 AD, making it one of England's oldest hilltop towns.
I used my Canon R5 with the 24-105mm lens at 50mm, capturing a 6-second exposure at ISO 400 and f/11. The blue hour light in the sky balanced perfectly with the warm tungsten glow from the Victorian street lamps, creating that classic contrast between cool and warm tones. The textures of the weathered stone, the uneven cobbles, the worn wooden doors—all of it came alive in this light.
This photo captures Gold Hill in one of its most peaceful states—quiet, glowing, and full of character. The warm light from the lamps adds depth and charm to the steep street, while the soft tones of the evening sky create that natural contrast that brings out every detail. It's a moment of calm from a place filled with history, showing classic English village charm and the gentle stillness of an evening in Dorset.
When you look at this photograph, I want you to feel that peace—standing on Gold Hill's cobbles as the streetlights glow against the blue hour sky, where the 1973 Hovis advert was filmed and where 18th-century cottages overlook the Blackmore Vale from King Alfred's 880 AD hilltop town in Shaftesbury, Dorset.
