About This Photo

I’m not the type of person to make you believe every photo I take is with intention and purpose. It’s not. Sometimes a photo comes together out of losing the plan and exploring other options, just like this one. When I left my home I had a forecast resembling a clear sky, so I went out hoping to catch the full moon behind the Palace Pier. By the time I got there the weather had turned and the clouds had rolled in. The clear skies I was banking on were long gone, replaced with low cloud and a flat blue hour light. Instead of calling it a night though, I wandered. No real aim, just looking for something that might work — and I ended up right here, at the water’s edge, tripod legs just above the incoming tide.

I set up the tripod, let the waves lap at its feet, and composed the old West Pier between the four rusted support pillars. It felt balanced, even if a bit off-the-cuff. It wasn’t until I saw it properly on the big screen later that it really hit me. The blue hour glow, the moody cloud cover, and those rusted remains — everything just clicks. It’s gritty and calm all at once.

So, while I can’t say this photo was part of some grand plan, I can say that sometimes the best shots come from just going with the flow and seeing where the night takes you.
