About This Photo

Early March mornings in Arundel can deliver the most atmospheric conditions, and this particular morning was exceptional. I'd checked the forecast and seen that mist was likely, so I set out in the pre-dawn darkness to position myself along the River Arun. As I arrived, the castle was already shrouded in this beautiful, ethereal fog—exactly what I'd hoped for.

The soft, diffused light was perfect. It created this mystical atmosphere around Arundel Castle, one of England's most iconic medieval fortresses. The mist was thick enough to add mystery but not so heavy that it obscured the castle's magnificent architecture. Every turret and battlement was softened by the fog, making this 11th-century stronghold appear almost dreamlike. I set up for a long exposure to capture the smooth, mirror-like reflection in the River Arun below—13 seconds to turn the gently moving water into glass.

What I love about this image is how the mist transforms a familiar landmark into something otherworldly. The castle, which has stood on this site for nearly a thousand years, feels both present and distant—solid yet somehow floating in the fog. The boat moored in the foreground adds a touch of everyday life to this historical scene, a reminder that Arundel is still a living, working town.

When you look at this photograph, I want you to feel that sense of mystery and timelessness—standing beside the River Arun on a cold March morning, watching Arundel Castle emerge from the mist like a vision from the medieval past.
