Silver Stand

During my early morning visit to Ambersham Common, this small clump of silver birch trees caught my attention immediately. Standing tall amongst the purple heather like a natural sculpture, they created such a striking contrast—the silver-white bark and delicate foliage against that vibrant purple carpet. It was one of those compositions that nature arranges better than any photographer could plan.

The early morning light was doing beautiful work here. It cast this soft glow that highlighted the delicate branches and leaves of the birches, making their pale trunks almost luminous. The heather surrounding them was in full bloom, that rich purple stretching out endlessly. Above, the sky was mixing soft blues with pastel yellows—those gentle dawn colours that only last for minutes after sunrise.

What I love about this scene is the relationship between the trees and their environment. Silver birch are pioneer species, often the first to colonize heathland, and seeing them here feels completely natural yet somehow special. They're not dominating the landscape but standing as elegant accents within it, their silvery presence a perfect counterpoint to the warmth and richness of the purple heath.
