About This Photo

There's something magical about early April mornings on the South Downs when the mist behaves just right. I'd set out before dawn to Kingston Ridge, hoping the conditions would create that ethereal atmosphere I'd been envisioning. As I reached the viewpoint looking down toward Ashcombe, I could see the mist rolling gently across the valley, and there—standing proudly above it all—was Ashcombe Windmill.

The fog was perfect. Thick enough to soften the landscape and create mystery, but not so heavy that it obscured the windmill completely. The soft morning light was just beginning to filter through, illuminating patches of the scene while leaving others shrouded in white. The windmill became this beautiful silhouette against the layers of mist, its distinctive shape unmistakable even through the veil.

What I love about this image is how the mist transforms a familiar Sussex landscape into something almost otherworldly. The trees and fields are just hints and suggestions, gradually emerging from the fog. The windmill stands as a constant—a historic sentinel that's been watching over these valleys for centuries, now appearing like something from a dream.

When you look at this photograph, I want you to feel that quiet sense of wonder—of standing on Kingston Ridge as dawn breaks, watching the mist swirl around Ashcombe Windmill and the surrounding countryside, creating one of those fleeting moments where familiar Sussex feels timeless and mysterious.
